I Don't Need Any 'Adjustments'

Phew! Glad that Family law test was finally over. It marks the end of a busy two-week period which includes 4 assignments to be handed up and 2 tests. How do I pamper myself then? By watching The Adjustment Bureau! It was the perfect tonic to inject some life into how I felt after the test.

*BEWARE: SPOILERS AHEAD*

If you believe in choice,
If you believe in chance,
If you believe in free will,
Fight for it.

Judging from the tagline in the trailer itself, you definitely know that this is a must watch movie which is not to be missed. To be honest, the movie actually took some time to build up its plot and transform itself from a typical romantic film to a movie which is filled with imagination and creativity. I mean, what the heck is the ‘Adjustment Bureau’? The first impression which I got was four pensioned old man wearing super old-fashioned clothing.

As the movie went on, it unfolded the mystery behind these ah peks and according to them, they are the ones who determine our directions and plans in life albeit with some orders from the ‘Chairman’. The element of romance was provided in the form of a former Time Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive, Matt Damon and his beautiful co-star Emily Blunt. Basically, this movie revolves around the live of David Norris (Matt Damon) who is bidding to be a Senator whilst having a relationship with Elise Sellas (Emily Blunt). Then came along the ah peks who are trying to stop them from being together as it is against ‘the plan’. It was some sort of a modern Romeo & Juliet romance added with the ‘Bourne’ trilogy along with the imagination of Inception. Yes! That was how good it was!

However, what makes this movie really awesome was what David Norris had to go through in order to be with Elise. He always believes that when he is with her, it is because of CHANCE regardless of what the ‘plan’ was. He believes that when he chose to love her, it was CHOICE and when he fought against all odds to make sure they are not separated by the ah peks, it was by his own FREE WILL.

This post is not about me being a movie critique but to pose this mind boggling question after watching the movie. Do we control our destiny, or do unseen forces manipulate us? Do we accept a predetermined path in life? Well I personally feel that we are our own destiny and we are the ones controlling it. Never let people control who you are or what you do or what you believe in whether these ‘forces’ are unseen or can be seen.

What matters most is how much you believe in yourself and what you’re fighting for. Never let others dictate how you run your life, what your sense of righteousness is and what you believe in. Just remember that when you don’t have that sense of ‘belief’, your battle is half way lost in whatever you’re doing.

I’ll end this post with a few memorable dialogues in the movie. There was a scene where David and Elise were running through doors that could teleport them to anywhere and with the ah peks breathing down their neck, Davis said,” Okay, I can go through this door, alone. You'll never see me or the people chasing us again. Or you can come with me, and I don't know what's on the other side, but I'd know you'd be next to me. And that's all I wanted since the minute I met you.” Not surprisingly, Elise answered, “I coming with you”.

“Most people live life on the path we set for them. Too afraid to explore any other. But once in a while people like you come along and knock down all the obstacles we put in your way. People who realize free will is a gift, you'll never know how to use until you fight for it. I think that's The Chairman's real plan. And maybe, one day, we won't write the plan. You will.”
